This is the 9/11 of the Evangelical world. We will look back upon in years to come and refer to "Before Ted" and "After Ted." Many leaders have attempted to minimize this in the past weeks by saying things like “Ted who?” even though they served on the same committees with him for years. It is sad that in the name of disturbing contributor's feathers, mature fathers of the faith will do asinine things like this that are obviously false for the whole world to see.

Let me suggest some lines to what could become an updated version of the Billy Graham team’s 1950’s agreement to hold one another in accountability. It worked for them apparently, but maybe there is a need for an update. Here goes.

Let’s drop the strategy of relying upon someone we are “accountable” to.

This approach, though great in theory, clearly isn’t working. In order for the accountability approach to work, the person being held in account must be absolutely truthful. Anyone who doesn’t want to be found out can easily manipulate another person. Continue your accountability group, but realize there is by no means a guarantee that the appearance of truthfulness is the same as authentic truthfulness.

More to come…
