I am a big fan of Mother Teresa. Thanks to her life and model, this generation of believers won back a large degree of credibility from the ever-critical, ever-watchful eyes of the media and anti-Christian cultures around the globe. I have read probably every biography released about her. After wading through all of these bios, it is apparent that she was very difficult to work for. She had a somewhat dictatorial style of leadership – “my way or the highway” as some put it. Some called her a tyrant – even though many who said these things loved her tremendously. They spoke from their hearts.
Look into the biography of St. Francis – more than the glossy ones anyway. He was very similar in his work ethic and ways of connecting with co-workers. He was a workaholic more or less. He didn’t understand those who were less committed to helping those in need than him. More than once he went way overboard in dealing with colleagues.
All of that to say, we are all in process. When I read / hear stories of people like these, they aren’t diminished in my estimation one bit. Quite the opposite; I find them all the more encouraging. Why? Because they are real! They are truly human. But they are humans who have been filled with God’s Spirit like me. Deep inside of me the light goes on and I begin to think, “Maybe there is the possibility that I could become a person who changes life for others as well…”
