Paul’s "attibutes of an elder" summary is at best a partially complete listing of what being an effective leader is about. The single dimension of “practiced character” is indeed an important issue. However, there are three other vital aspects of character that Paul mentions that are essential, but are beyond the arena of the “practiced” character matter.
Paul’s counsel to Timothy was more than ten verses. The entire book of First Timothy is devoted to a broader perspective on what it takes for a leader to function effectively as a leader who is not simply maintaining, but expanding the kingdom. This is a vital assumption that Paul is making in his words to Pastor Timothy in his catalytic, expansive church environment.
It is difficult for the vast majority of churches in North America to make heads or tails of what Paul shared with Timothy in his first letter when all but a smattering of churches on the national map are currently maintenance-oriented churches.
