Paul assumes that a true elder will have a great relationship with “outsiders.”  That seems to be simple enough, but let that image sink in a bit.

In order to have a great relationship with outsiders, to be liked by those in the greater community, well-known as an individual, appreciated for his or her part in getting involved with the people of the city, the person in question must have definite and specific qualities.

After leading “leaders” for nearly 30 years, I can assure you that the ability to build bridges with outsiders can be learned. We can’t connect, show people we want to be their friend, much less be looked up to as leaders if we have no relationship with them. Again, change is in the air! This is not an impossible line of demarcation.

With coaching things will begin to move in the right direction.
