My friend Charlie Wear has categorized levels of commitment within organizations.  This is especially important to understand and flow with in spiritual organizations.  Forward progress all comes down to the capacity to actionize commitment.

The top level are the “Crazy Committed.”  These are easy to spot – their hair is usually on fire from a good dousing of liquid butane.  In any exciting Jesus adventure that is worth calling people to jump on board with there will be at least a few “Crazy Committed” ones.

With these folks it is important that you, as a leader, understand how to rightly “pay” them in the “tender” they value.  In my experience, many, certainly not all, in the crazy committed area, are mostly paid by being properly, regularly thanked by the leader of the given group or organization.

NEVER patronize these vital leaders.
They can smell a phony from ten kilometers. They will, guaranteed, become unhinged, in the presence of phoniness. But then, they wouldn’t have joined up if there was any possibility of phoniness in the first place.

These are the powerful change makers who are profoundly catalytic in the life of an organization.

At different times I have been in the crazy committed group.  Right now I am not able to function in that way.  I may well be back in that camp again before all is said and done.

Thank them, pay them their currency, and thank Jesus frequently for their input.
