All gifts from God come in an embryonic form. To see any of God’s gifts differently than that is to take the lazy way out. I have heard the gifts explained differently - whether they are the Romans 12 non-charismata ones or the 1 Cor. 12-14 charismata ones. All gifts grow with the diligent development of them.

There is an aspect to all gifts - teaching in particular is a gift that requires us as communicators to seek out help in order that we can continually grow in our gifting. Think in terms of teaching as one of the “talents” Jesus spoke of that he expected the receivers to invest. Obviously he referred to a monetary value. Ironically, in our day we use the word “talent” as a synonym for a gift. To quote Napoleon Dynamite, “I’ve got talents - computer hacking talents, bow hunting talents, numb chuck talents…” I don’t remember any of those “talents” or “gifts” being referred to in Romans 12, but you get the idea. In order for any of us to be effective in any ministry in this life, we must be empowered with talents / gifts that are beyond us - are from him. At the same time, part of the arrangement is that we see ourselves as diligent investors, overseers, developers of said talents in order to get the most out of that he has entrusted us with in this lifetime.

This way of seeing God’s gifts within us, is a clear picture of God’s grace working through us. As we see that it is God’s abilities working through us that makes us effective, and only God’s gifts that empowers us to be effective, we all walk in humility each step of the way. There is no bragging on any of our parts - and no false humility either. “God made and continues to make a deposit of his presence and understanding in my life… and I continue to invest in this as I take seriously the stewardship of this gift.”
