I have a really hard time with the idea that the Body of Christ would be using the threat of violence as a means to accomplish safety. Yes, it makes perfect sense when we think about this in terms of liability, crowd control, and general safety but I just don't see anywhere in the Bible where violence or the threat of violence is held up as an option.
I wish I had a better answer than well trained, unarmed people.
As a read on another blog (I wish I could remember where,) something that the Secret Service knows well is that "you can't stop crazy." When we are dealing with mentally unstable people, people that are not thinking rationally, people that are potentially suicidal, is the threat of violence actually a deterrent?
I know there are no easy answers here but I also know that Jesus gave us an example of loving our neighbors and our enemies.

I wish I would have thought about this when I served an inner city church, this would have been so helpful! Instead, the good folks and elders chose to lock the doors for many events and only those who seemingly knew "the password" were welcomed with open arms into the building..... Actually, there were purses, etc lifted over the years, so the fear was real, just not dealt with in a healthy way.
